Palace announces Queen to give up 25 patronages to younger Royals

The Queen is stepping down from representing a number of her patronages, the Palace have announced, due to her advancing age.

Her Majesty is currently a patron of over 600 organisations in the UK and Commonwealth, but, like her schedule, she is taking leave of some of these duties.

Buckingham Palace have announced that 25 organisations will no longer have the Sovereign’s support, as she tries to lighten the burden of Royal duties: “At the end of The queen’s 90th birthday year, Her Majesty will step down as patron from a number of national organisations.

“The patronages will be passed on to other members of the Royal Family in the coming months.”

We wrote about the potential passing on of a few patronages to younger Royals – including to Prince Harry and The Duchess of Cambridge – earlier in the year. This rumour proved to be correct.

“Many of the organisations listed below already have other members of the Royal Family as vice-patrons or presidents, which will ensure a smooth transition,” the statement said.

It has been confirmed that Prince Harry will take over as patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the Rugby Football League (RFL); Harry was already vice-patron. Kate, as a tennis lover herself, will become over the All English Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (Wimbledon) from the 90-year-old Monarch. Prince William will become president of the FA; he is currently vice-president.

We speculate that Princess Anne, already heavily involved with the charity, will take over her mother’s support of Save the Children, while Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will help by taking on Battersea Dogs Home and Barnardo’s.

Prince Philip similarly scaled back his patronages when he turned 90 in 2011, to take his health and stamina into account. By all means, the Duke is still exceptionally fit, but neither he nor The Queen can be expected to perform such numbers of duties as they work well past the average retirement age.

Prince Charles and Camilla have also been accompanying The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to the State Opening of Parliament in recent years, and The Prince of Wales even took over a small part of the Order of the Bath ceremony from his mother in 2013, as it involved climbing stairs.

We will be having more updates of who will be taking over supporting which organisations shortly.
