The tale was first a book, published under the same name back in 2012. Bowen was made homeless in 1997, later becoming a heroin addict, sleeping rough for ten years.

Kate, as patron of Action on Addiction, was there as the event was raising money for the organisation. AoA brings help to those living with addiction and those living with people who suffer problems of addiction.

Before the showing the Duchess met the cast and crew who made the film and representatives from the charity. This included the star – ginger cat Bob himself.

Luke Treadaway and Joanne Froggatt take up the two lead roles. Treadaway said: “The fact that this was a true story and it was a film that would educate people about addiction and homelessness made it a really great film to be involved with.

“It was a great story about a real person who managed to turn it around.”

The film is in cinemas nationwide from today.
