Competitive siblings: Will, Kate & Harry race at London Marathon training session

There was sibling rivalry abound today at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, as Prince Harry took on William and Catherine, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in a race at a London Marathon training session for Heads Together.

150 runners, including professionals such as Paula Radcliffe and Iwan Thomas, attended the training session, and were joined by William, Kate and Harry to see their progress ahead of the 26.2 mile race in April. All of the participants are supporting the mental health charity to raise funds.

The Royal foundation’s campaign, Heads Together, unites leading organisations in the field of mental health to change the stigma surrounding it. It is also the Virgin London Marathon’s charity of 2017.

Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge spoke to marathon runners before she raced Prince William and Prince Harry.

Competing against one-another for the first leg of a 50m relay, the Royals kicked off the race for their respective teams. Prince Harry, however, couldn’t resist cheating, as he did when running against Usain Bolt when he visited Jamaica in 2012. The red-head started ahead of his brother and sister-in-law, thus beating them to the finish line.

Prince William – who was teasing both Harry and Catherine beforehand – tapped in second, while the Duchess swapped over team members third.

It seems the Duke wasn’t particularly keen on racing his wife and brother, joking before the race: “Oh my hamstring!” The three lined up and jeered one another on as the crowd counted down to start the sprint.

The professional runners also gave the group some tips on the upcoming marathon, including Radcliffe’s suggestion to ‘visualise why you’re running and what you’re running for’ to get you through it.

William, Catherine and Harry also dropped in at the Copper Box Arena to talk to team members about their preparations for the marathon and to outline how all 38,000 runners in the 2017 race can help turn the event into the “mental health marathon.” It is understood they will all receive the blue Heads Together headband for the race.

They are all inspiring, young, relaxed and compassionate. Excellent example.
