Interview with engaged couple Prince Harry & Meghan Markle

Earlier this evening, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first interview as an engaged couple was broadcast across the world, as they revealed information about their relationship and how Harry popped the question.

Having spent many ‘cosy nights in’, the couple were at Nottingham Cottage ‘roasting a chicken’ for dinner, Harry and Meghan explained.

“We were trying to roast a chicken, it was just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic, he got on one knee,” Meghan smiled.

Asked if it was an instant ‘yes’ from her, she said: “Yes, as a matter of fact I could barely let him finish proposing, I said ‘can I say yes now?”

To which Prince Harry replied: “She didn’t even let me finish, then there was hugs and I had the ring on my finger and I was like ‘can I do the ring’ and she said ‘oh yes do it’, so no it was a really nice moment, just the two of us and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well”.

The actress agreed it was an ‘amazing surprise’.

It was clear throughout the interview that they were comfortable in each other’s company and were very happy together. They held hands throughout the interview and regularly looked at one another, smiling.

Prince Harry was introduced to Meghan by an anonymous mutual friend, they explained, having a blind dinner date in London, about a year and a half ago.

Harry said the moment he saw Meghan for the first time he knew he had to “up his game”. “I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her and she was sitting there and I was like ‘OK, I’ll have to up my game here, I’ll sit down and make sure I’ve got good chat’,” said Harry.

They had two dates ‘back-to-back’ in the capital in July 2016, before the Prince said he ‘persuaded’ Meghan to join him in Botswana for a holiday where they ‘camped under the stars’.

This time was ‘crucial’ for them to get to know one another, Harry said, also commenting that they ‘did it in reverse’ with plenty of nights in, to stay off the radar, which ‘brought them closer’ in a short amount of time.

Such was the desire to see one another, they never went more than two weeks, and it was a continuous pattern of flying between London to Toronto, with Ms Markle even going straight from the plane to filming on set.

There had been numerous reports of Meghan having met The Queen, and she confirmed she had a couple of times. She described it as ‘amazing’ to see the love the Prince has for his grandmother.

“The corgis took to you straight away,” Harry joked, with Meghan revealing that they were lying at her feet when she visited The Queen.

Queried about whether they want children, Harry replied ‘one step at a time,’ but that they would come ‘in the near future’.

He thought that Diana, Princess of Wales and his fiancee would be ‘thick as thieves’ and that his mother would be really excited for him.

Earlier in the day, the couple posed for photos in front of the press in the sunken garden at Kensington Palace.

The Prince clearly enjoys spending time with Meghan’s mother, Doria, whom he called ‘amazing’ with a big grin on his face, but the actress said he hadn’t had the chance to meet her father yet; Meghan’s parents are divorced.

Addressing the idea that their relationship had been a whirlwind, she said: “I don’t think that I would call it a whirlwind in terms of our relationship, obviously there have been layers attached to how public it has become after we had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing.

“But no, I think we were able to really have so much time just to connect and we never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other, even though we were obviously doing a long distance relationship. So it’s – we made it work.”

The couple said they both knew very little of each other before meeting so it was “refreshing”.
