This show-stopping brooch of The Queen’s once belonged to her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. It features a large emerald-cut diamond encircled by brilliant cut diamonds, with an outer row of 12 large diamonds. Nine strings of stones are suspended from this, creating a dramatic fringe.
The brooch was made for Queen Victoria in 1856 by Garrard. An existing piece in Victoria’s jewellery collection was remodelled with stones from the Sultan of Turkey, which she received in the same year.
The Queen Mother was fond of the piece, wearing it to her daughter’s coronation in 1953 and to Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981. Like The Queen, both women wear their favourite and historical pieces to important family events.
It was made to sit in the centre of the chest, when low necklines were fashionable and complimented such a brooch, but The Queen generally wears it on her shoulder. A heavy piece no doubt!
