Harry announces next Invictus Games to be hosted in Florida

Prince Harry today announced that the next Invictus Games, an international sporting competition for injured veterans, will be held in Orlando, Florida.

Despite currently working in Namibia fighting poachers, Kensington Palace released a video of the 30-year-old Prince, talking about the next games, which will be held 8th – 12th May 2016.

He mentioned that the games, held last September in London, had inspired many people across the country, and the ‘amazing British public embraced these Games’.

The Invictus Games says its aim is to use the ‘power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women’; last year more than 10 million people caught part of the 5-day event .

“It was an event that captured hearts, challenged minds and changed lives,” Harry said.

“The competitors showed grit, determination and humour: an absolute refusal to be beaten or be defined by their injuries – the Invictus spirit was born.”

Harry, who left the Army least month, dreamt the games could be a biannual event, and it seems his wish is coming true. In the video, the Prince, dressed in a suit with an Invictus Games pin on his lapel spoke of the next step for the competition.

“For me, the 2014 Games were just the beginning of the Invictus story. I wanted other cities and countries to look at the competition – what it meant to those taking part and those who saw it – and take up the challenge for the next Invictus Games.

“So today, I am absolutely delighted to announce that the United States has taken up that challenge and will host the next Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida.”

The next country to host the games seems fitting, as Prince Harry was first inspired with the idea of an injured veterans game, seeing the Warrior Games competition on a visit to Colorado in 2013. The venue will be the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
