Queen skips Christmas church service – still poorly

The Queen is not attending her usual Christmas morning church services today, as she still suffers with a heavy cold, Buckingham Palace has told the press.

Her Majesty disappointed the crowds gathered to see her and the Royal Family arrive at church, but the 90-year-old is still not over the cold which prevented her travelling to Norfolk on Wednesday.

She and Prince Philip took the Royal helicopter on Thursday instead.

Buckingham Palace said: “Her Majesty The Queen will not attend church at Sandringham this morning.

“The Queen continues to recover from a heavy cold and will stay indoors to assist with her recovery. Her Majesty will participate in the Royal Family Christmas celebrations during the day.”

The Duke of Edinburgh still went, walking down with members of the family. They will attend another service without The Queen at 11am.

It is the first time in nearly 30 years she has not gone to the Christmas church service, going every year for an early service since 1988. St Mary Magdalene Church sits at the end of a long path up to Sandringham House.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are also not at the Sandringham celebrations, as they celebrate in Berkshire with the Middletons instead.

The Queen’s Christmas message will still be broadcast this afternoon, as it is pre-recorded, usually in November.
