Teenage Cancer Trust unit celebrates 2nd birthday with Eugenie & Sarah

Princess Eugenie and Sarah, Duchess of York visited the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital today, to celebrate their 2nd birthday.

The mother and daughter spent time at the unit, chatting to those who are undergoing treatment at the Teenage Cancer Trust funded facility within the Oncology Unit, as well as their families.

Part of the visit saw Eugenie and Sarah learn more about the range of support that is provided within this state of the art unit, which features four en-suite in-patient bedrooms, TVs, laptops, games consoles and wi-fi, plus a social space with home cinema system, pool table, jukebox and breakfast bar, hopefully making the patients’ experience more bearable as they battle cancer.

The unit was kitted out with birthday decorations, plus cakes and party food to mark the special occasion.

Eugenie and her sister, Princess Beatrice, became patrons of the charity in June 2016, while Sarah is a long-term honorary patron, supporting the organisation since 1990.

The Princess works full-time as and associate director at the gallery, Hauser & Wirth, but has a handful of patronages in support of The Queen.

Almost half of young people with cancer are treated in hospitals with either younger children or older patients, often making the experience more isolating; there also isn’t the same level of expertise in standard cancer units. The Teenage Cancer Trust are building a wider Nursing & Support Service within the NHS to help all young people, wherever they receive treatment. To make this happen, they need to raise more than £20 million every year, and royal patronage helps with such fundraising efforts.

Kate Collins, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “It was a pleasure seeing our Honorary Patrons bring so much fun and positivity to the young people they met today, helping us celebrate the incredible support provided at this unit.

“We urgently need to raise more funds so we can expand our team of Teenage Cancer Trust nurses so we can support all young people with cancer who need us.  The commitment and support of our Honorary Patrons is so important in helping us move towards this goal.”
