The Crown cast: Hugh Laurie replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip?

As Matt Smith’s tenure playing Prince Philip in ‘The Crown’ comes to an end, rumour has it that Hugh Laurie is to take over the role.

The Mail Online are reporting that they have been told that Laurie, 58, who is famed for his roles in Blackadder, Stuart Little and House, will become The Duke of Edinburgh for the third instalment of the Netflix series.

This season will cover 20 years from the 1960s to the 1980s, thus will see the birth of Prince Edward, as well as Princess Anne’s marriage to Mark Phillips, Princess Margaret’s divorce, the Golden Jubilee, and the beginning of Prince Charles and Diana’s relationship.

Camilla is also reputed to be making an appearance, as an early girlfriend of the Prince’s.

We know that Olivia Colman will play The Queen, taking over from award-winning Claire Foye, and Helena Bonham Carter is to embody Princess Margaret.

Creator of the show, Peter Morgan is described as being ‘very keen’ on Hugh Laurie portraying the Prince Consort in his middle years, after seeing him alongside Colman in ‘The Night Manager’.

Laurie was awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to acting.
